There are no hard and fast rules of how you should discipline your child. Though parenting skills are equipped with all parents automatically, the level of the effectiveness varies according to the parenting styles applied by the parents.

There are many books and classes about parenting style and which method to follow. Authoritarian, permissive, and democratic are the three main types.

Authoritarian is considered to be a very strict way of disciplining. Parents are always right. Parents have full control over children.

Permissive parenting style is the total opposite of authoritarian parenting style. The control lies with the children. No rules and regulations to follow. Children are free to do anything they want.

If authoritarian is considered to be black and permissive is white, then democratic is gray. Democratic parenting style is actually the combination of both styles joined together.

So why is gray better than white or black?

This style of parenting involves a lot of communication and mutual understanding from both partners. There are rules and regulations which your child has to follow but you do listen and let them speak their minds. When you tell them wrong, be sure to give them the reason of why it is wrong and unacceptable.

If there is going to be punishment involved, make sure they know why. This type of parenting brings everyone together. You are giving your children respect and they will reciprocate. You together with your child will be able to handle conflicts in a better way. If they are right and you are wrong - say sorry. It is alright for parents to be wrong sometimes.

Your children will learn to think by themselves while being monitored by parents. You are not limiting their creativity, mind, thoughts and passions in any way. You are simply guiding them. They will learn to become dependent within the boundaries that you have set for them.

These rules and regulations should be flexible when needed to be. For instance, as your child grows and faces new experiences and situations in life, your disciplining method changes but the core of it remains.

One other thing I learned about the democratic style is there is lots of love and affection involved. You are constantly bonding with your child. Besides the fact that your child is going to grow up to be a well-behaved adult with good attitude, your child will be close to you and will think of you positively. The best part is your child will consider you to be on his side and will be one of the first, if not first, person he thinks of when he faces challenges in life.

From my experience, I feel that the democratic parenting style is the best way to go when raising your child. You are your child's role model. How you want your child to be depends entirely on you. The effective parenting techniques are purely the that will help you find the right way of disciplining your child and the parenting style that suits you.

Learning to read, like learning anything else, is all about repetition. However, I have yet to come across a child who likes repetition.

This being said, the biggest struggle in teaching a child to read is mostly about overcoming the boredom that they experience when asked to repeat anything. This is especially true of children who are being home schooled.

There are, however, several things that you can do to overcome this.

Read to your child

Children struggle to do anything that they find meaningless. We as adults know how important the skill of reading is to not only their academic career, but also their job prospects in the future, for their basic survival on a day to day basis, and a myriad of other things.

Start by letting your child see the relevance of reading by reading to them. There is no specific age to begin; but of course the sooner you start the better. Ideally you should start reading to your child form the womb.

Children can hear their mother's voice clearly in womb and the slow rhythms of your reading will keep them calm and relaxed. Then once they are born, read to them at a regular time every day.

Simply by setting up this reading routine you are teaching your child the value of reading and soon it will become as natural to them as eating and sleeping. Reading is a habit.

It doesn't matter what you read to your child, and for the first few years they probably will not understand you anyway, but soon you will find that they begin to ask you questions about the text that you read, and soon they will be ready for you to teach them how to read.

Let your child see you read

There is a growing concern for improving fluency and speed reading among schools, teachers, parents, even homeschooling parents; and with good reason. Children are expected to learn more and comprehend faster than ever before. In the classroom, it doesn't matter if a child has a learning problem, LD, dyslexia, or ADHD. Every child is expected to learn and read faster. As a parent though, it can be tough. First you have to understand what reading fluency is and then you have to know what to do about it. How can you help your child improve their reading speed?

So, let's start at what reading fluency is. Reading fluency is retrieval automaticity. To be an efficient reader, you need to be able to retrieve words automatically. Studies show that slow single word reading leads to poor comprehension and frustration. If you can't read rapidly, you can't hold large pieces of language - text in meaning!

When you read with fluency you do so without being conscious of the reading process. This allows you the ability to comprehend what you have read.

Reading fluency encompasses the speed or rate of reading, as well as the ability to read materials with expression. M. S. Meyer and R. H. Felton (1999) defined fluency as "'the ability to read connected text rapidly, smoothly, effortlessly, and automatically with little conscious attention to the mechanics of reading, such as decoding".

So now that we know what reading fluency is, what causes a child to have problems reading fluently? Typically when a child knows how to read but is a slow reader, the real problem is due to visual tracking difficulties. To find out if this is the case, listen to your child as he/she reads aloud. Is he/she skipping, omitting, or repeating words as he/she reads OR is/she mispronouncing them?

It doesn't matter whether a child is dyslexic, has an identified learning disability, or is even gifted. Some children are just slow readers. And, usually when a child is a slow reader it is because he/she is missing bits and pieces when reading, so he/she reads the texts over and over again to make sense out of them. This actually happened with one of my children. He was tested to be gifted, but took 'forever' to read his assignments.

The second problem leading to poor reading fluency could be that the child is a slow processor - if he/she reads accurately aloud but is slow when reading.

The solution to both of these problems - the skipping & repeating words or the slow processing of the words - is the same, reading drills that are short in duration and designed to work specifically on the visual tracking and speed within a short time frame. Studies have shown that using short time frames for oral word reading practice - reading words across a page rather than reading lists of words or flash cards for five or six minutes a day has shown to give substantial gains in reading. The key to the success was doing the repeated oral reading from left to right over a period of time e.g. six months to twenty-three months.

Every person in the family takes on a role. What are the roles? Parents. Oldest child. Youngest child. But I'm talking about the other roles like: I was the family clown. I would try to get everyone laughing. That got me into a bit of trouble in 4th Grade. There was a period of time I would make up stories about what happened in class just to get everyone laughing at the lunch or dinner table. I didn't realize that mom would bring up some of those 'incidents' at the next parent/teacher interview. BUSTED!

All families have the funny one, the peacekeeper, the rule maker, the enabler, the rule breaker or problem child. I know there are tons more terms but I want to talk about the Peacekeeper. In a high conflict family, the Peacekeeper is often one of the children.

And a pattern develops - the conflict escalates. The Peacekeeper steps in. A family meeting is called. Trying to use 'good' communication skills, the issues are discussed. Solutions are considered, discarded until one or more is chosen.

And then, everything goes back to the old way until the next time the conflict escalates.

There can be NO CHANGE without new information. If you see your family going through the same patterns time and again it's time to consider taking a parenting/family class. Yes, family therapy is good except that it doesn't often incorporate new information - education.

Everyone in the family needs to be able to attend the class (OK, young children are exempt - they will learn the new patterns as everyone else in the family uses them). Everyone needs to be able to hear what the instructor/teacher is saying and get that information firsthand by sitting in the class. THEN a family discussion about what everyone learned and how to incorporate the new skills is necessary. Because everyone shared the learning, the likelihood of the new skills being used is very high. And you'll see changes in the family patterns.

Step out of the old way. Look around your city for some family classes. Take a look online for some classes. We are surrounded by new information and it is all but impossible to change the way we are doing something until we take in some new information. What's that definition of insanity: continuing to do something the same old way and expecting different results...

And if you have that one child that you KNOW came from your body but you are SURE.
